Traffic Jam!
Dear Daycaring Families:
There's been some concern about safety in the parking lot, and confusion about what is legal. I've checked with the Fairfax police department, and unfortunately for families to come to school from the west (traveling east on Drake) or north (traveling south on Oak Manor) there are only three ways to use the parking lot - none of them ideal:
- Illegal - it is illegal to turn left into the parking lot when traveling east on Drake. There is a Òdouble doubleÓ yellow line, and the curve in the road makes it difficult to assess oncoming traffic.
- Unsafe - it is unsafe to enter the parking lot from the exit ramp on Oak Manor that is why there are one-way arrows painted on the lot. There is not sufficient visibility around the corner of the church, and the one-way arrows mean that there is not the expectation that cars will be coming from that direction. However, because the lot is private property, the arrows do not have the force of law.
- Inconvenient - Officer Rhonda suggested that people could continue on Drake, turn around at a safe place, and then enter the lot by turning right from Drake.
Another solution is to park on Oak Manor, and make the short walk to school.
I hope you will carefully consider how you use the parking lot, and make the choices that best balance convenience with safety.
Here's to a safe school!
